Yale School of Medicine Requires Abortion Training for Ob/gyn Residents

Ob/gyn residents at Yale’s School of Medicine must undergo training in abortion procedures in a required residency program established by Planned Parenthood’s Connecticut branch (PPC).

Second year ob/gyn residents will have to complete two four-week rotations with PPC for training in abortion techniques such as vacuum suction, medical abortions, and other “family planning” services in a program entitled Family Planning/Ambulatory Surgery.

Umm, good? Even most pro-life advocates admit that abortions are morally ok when the woman’s life is in danger. Shouldn’t we train our doctors how to do it? Yale doesn’t even require them to participate in one if they object to it.

Although the course is required in the residency curriculum, ob/gyn residents do not have to participate in any abortions if they sign a paper that states they believe abortion is against their “personal/religious” beliefs. However, residents cannot opt of learning the theoretical applications of the program, including techniques related to still-birth, miscarriage, and complications related to abortion. Students also cannot opt out of performing ultrasounds on women intending to have abortions.

Again, good. Who could possibly object to performing ultrasounds on women who are going to have abortions? I don’t understand why. This is ridiculous.

  1. I would think all ob/gyns would need to know that stuff. Sometimes the mother’s life is in danger and sometimes the baby dies inside the mother but the mother’s body doesn’t do anything to remove it. Even if docs don’t want to perform elective abortions, there are times when it is neccessary to save a woman’s life or health, so they really need to know how to do it.

  2. OB/Gyns will have to know this stuff when they start having to treat women suffering the aftermath of botched and/or back-alley abortions after the fundies manage to take away a woman’s right to choose.
