The Commander-in-Brief

Two quick notes on the Prez:

  • He finally admitted that the US holds people in secret prisons and uses “alternative” interrogation techniques. To quote my favorite show (returns Oct. 6 - new webisodes up now), “It is not enough to survive. We must be worthy of survival.” If you trample the Constitution in order to fight terrorism, then what have you saved?
  • He also made this comment on the CBS Evening News last night: “One of the hardest parts of my job is to connect Iraq to the war on terror.” Maybe there is a reason it is so hard, Mr. President. The only connections there are the ones you’ve created. (credit to The Coffee House)

  1. So our president is a war criminal, fabulous. You know, the fact that Bush can admit to having secret torture camps and not be impeached says terrible things about our government and our country as a whole.

………ok, james, you remember me…right?….i’m the guy that makes fun of christians on your other post…….you seem to be a man of reason….so maybe i can prove to you how contrarian i am….i’ve never run this past anyone before….so please tell me what you think….
i have been voting against the political establishment for years…..that’s against the republicans and the democrats…i voted for john anderson in 1980…..i voted for ross perot….call it a protest vote …call it anything you want….i cannot in good conscience…vote for people that do not represent me……
you see….free speech…costs money….it’s free for you and i….but as soon as we run for office…even if we have something beneficial to say to the public….it costs millions…i don’t have that money…and i’m betting you don’t either…..but the corporations and special interest groups do…this circumvents our political clout as individual citizens…..they are buying influence……and as business people…they want a return on that investment….katrina?…..if anything could be an indictment of how the government on all levels does not represent the common people…that is…….i could continue….but lets stay relevant to this post….
i view mr. bush as an embarrassment….with the emphasis on ass…..he is a bumbling christian simpleton who couldn’t articulate his way out of a kindergarden class..”hey condi, ..i gotta go to the bathroom”…….mr clinton?….i wouldn’t trust him as far as i could spit him….that goes for the ice princess too…but they sure do talk purdy……….and by the way don’t tell me georgie is really in charge…..it’s gotta be….”dick”……
saddam should have been taken out in 1991……and if there was a democrat in office back then…you would be hearing all about it…..but georgie isn’t gonna go bad mouthing his pop….
it’s hubris my friend…..we’ve got god on our side and we’re right so, shut up, sit down, and hold on……
we put the natzis on trial ……and they were much bigger monsters….the soviets wanted to execute all of them……these enemies we have in prison in gitmo and elsewhere are at our mercy……does not the spirit of the constitution and the great documents of government that we have apply to all human beings?…….this is not the war on terror…this is the war against islamic fascism………they don’t hate freedom georgie….they view modernity as anti-islam…..
i am a world war two buff and i love war movies….gregory peck is one of my favorites……in the movie “macarthur” he says:……”but by-passing luzon has implications that stain american honor”…….stain american honor….yep…
this has been war on the cheep…..mr. bush ……gen. meyers…..saying this is as important a struggle as world war two……….the ideological struggle of the 21st century…..where’s the draft, the war bonds etc………where are the 500,000 to one million troops that should be in iraq right now?……..our elected public sevants don’t want to tell us what we don’t want to hear…….it’s all about getting elected…….
i agree with you… that saddam had nothing to do with al-qada……nothing to do with 9/11…..but don’t kid yourself…..he was watching those planes fly into those buildings…..and high fiveing his generals in some palace…. throwing a party….and thinking to himself….how can i pull that off?
the oil is the security issue……we need to get off it right now ……..brazil is running their economy on sugar cane……i know, i know……i drive a cadillac…..but if the entire g-8 shifted to a hydrogen economy……..we wouldn’t have to worry about this part of the world so much…. or the environment…….or….being blown up…..

  3. I agree that Saddam was an evil person. But the world isn’t black and white. And I’m not sure that removing him from power didn’t create more evil than leaving him there would have. We are now caught in a situation where we cannot leave. If we left right now, Iran would take over the country just as they did in Lebanon. And we can’t allow them to have true democratic elections either because then they would just elect shiite leaders who would be puppets of Iran. The best case for us right now would be if there was a dictator in place who dispised Islam. Unfortunately, we have him on trial right now awaiting execution. Was he a threat to US? It is so murky now, it is hard to say if we will ever know. But we do know for certain that militant Islamic terrorists are a threat to us and by removing him from power we have created an oppurtunity for them to thrive.

  4. Oh, and I voted Nader in 04. I couldn’t bring myself to vote for either of the two clowns running and I really like some of the things he says about getting corporations out of government.

  5. Lane Arnold Says:

    ………..thanks man, i voted for nader too…..but i wasn’t enthusiastic. the way i see it… it’s poor planning…..falure of imagination…..
9/11 showed us that the greatest threat to open societies is covert asymetrical warfare…….perhaps your right…..maybe the best policy would have been containment……but with individuals posing as bombs ……i wonder if that would be effective either…..
we can use our millitary to depose dictators…..but utimately it is the indigenous people that must choose….that is supposed to be our way…..
in my opinion…things might be different now if we had enough troops at the begining of this ……to protect the infrastructure…….seal the borders……impose martial law if necessary…..and say to the iraqis….you are entitled to a representitive form of government…..you are also entitled to a percentage of your oil reserves……meaning not just political freedom ….but prosperity……….kuwait is doing this…..and they are not radicals………it might have trumped this religious violence.
what now?……well, we are not going to stop the sunnis and the shia from killing each other……..it’s been going on for centuries……but i don’t think standing in the crossfire is very smart………we should be engaged in diplomacy with the turks the russians etc…….because the peacefull group in all of this is the kurds….they want us there…..that’s where we should make our stand….pull out of the rest of the country and move north…..build a nice big base there…….and make the south a no-fly zone….because as soon as we leave……iran is going to move in with their troops….this i fear…..

  6. Lane Arnold Says:

…….oh, yea…..this was supposed tho make the middle east a more progessive place…….we can’t just look at the world through the lens of our culture……it should have been said that the victory cannot be just ours………..it has to be theirs too……..

  7. I was reading an article earlier today at the Tehran Times, where the Iranian Pres (can’t spell his name) was basically saying the Iraqis should tell us to get out and then he would “help stabilize Iraq”.

I wasn’t real enthusiastic about Nader either. I don’t really think he’d make a good president, but he seemed the best of the bunch to me. And he really is right about the need to remove corporate power from our government.

  8. ………hey james…….impress your friends…..it’s pronounced:

    are—ma—din—ee—jad (short “a”)

  9. Yeah, it’s one of those words that I’m pretty sure I know how to say, but I’m too embarassed to try and say it in front of anyone just in case I’m wrong
