Freedom of Speech? Not in Modern America

Via Yahoo News

“In the months before the 2004 election, dozens of people across the nation were banished from or arrested at Bush political rallies, some for heckling the president, others simply for holding signs or wearing clothing that expressed opposition to the war and administration policies.

Similar things have happened at official, taxpayer-funded, presidential visits, before and after the election. Some targeted by security have been escorted from events, while others have been arrested and charged with misdemeanors that were later dropped by local prosecutors.”

I know this is sort of old news, but it deserves to be brought up again (and again and again). If this was one person complaining about being removed, I’d probably say they weren’t being truthful and had done something disruptive. But this isn’t one person, or even a single group. It is a pattern of behavior that has to stop. People are being arrested in the US for holding signs that say “No more war” and buttons that promote the opposition party. Now there are lawsuits coming in which hopefully will put a stop to this fascist practice. But they shouldn’t have to in the first place. This is not freedom. Can you imagine what Thomas Jefferson would say about this?

I am ashamed of what this generation has allowed to become of the US. Our forefathers have entrusted to us one thing, one ideal linking over 200 years of American history and we are tossing it aside like the spoiled little rich nation we have become. For a group of leaders that claim to follow Christian lives, they fail to display even the smallest measure of humility. We have a group of absolutely bankrupt leaders who use the power they have been granted only to ensure that they and those they choose remain in power. I don’t care if it is a Republican or a Democrat; I just want someone in Washington to stand up for the law and not themselves. Does no one in this country believe in the ideals of personal freedom and responsibility we were founded upon anymore? We are a nation of laws, not me, and it is time our government remembers that.
