There is a story up on AOL about an Algerian man who was detained in response to the attacks on September 11 who was finally released in July.  He was apparently defecting from his country’s Air Force (altough he wasn’t a pilot) and seeking asylum in Canada.  It’s too convoluted a story to just sum up here without re-writing the article, but I did want to highlight my favorite part.

After finally convincing our government that he should be allowed to go free, they wanted to deport him back to Algeria (where he would have been put to death as a deserter) for overstaying his visa.  The visa he overstayed because he was in prison for 5 years for something he had no connection.  What a country.
