5 years later September 11
I am not talented enough to write down all my feelings on this event. But I wanted to remind people of the aftermath. That is what I remember and that is what hurts me the most. Those first few days we showed our potential as a nation. We came together and everything was going to be different. Politics were over. There were no Democrats and no Republicans on September 11th. We were Americans, a single solidified people. We were determined that even though this monstrous attack had occured, we would not, could not allow it to succeed. But isn’t that exactly what we’ve done?
Fear has changed this country. We are no longer the slumbering giant. Have we not become Don Quixote chasing after our own windmill giants, replacing chivalry with imperialism? We have lost touch with that moment when we were united as one.
Hopefully the video below will remind someone of that time like it reminded me. It is from the first episode of The Daily Show following the attacks. The sincerity Jon Stewart reveals is the sincerity we all had at that time. What happened to it?

I agree, we had a great opportunity to unite the world and bring about new understanding and appreciation for each other following the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Thank you for this post and the one that proceeded it. Following is my most recent post on this subject.
9/11 – An Attack Against Humanity
I read a very interesting note on meetings between Iran, China, and Russia at misneach blog a couple months ago. I wonder why I haven’t heard much about this anywhere else? The strategic value of developing closer relationships between theses countries is clear to see, for anyone who is paying attention.
China’s rapid growth is fueling an insatiable appetite for Oil.
Russia is looking for any market to sell its products and services. Is Iran hiring? Have they posted any want ads for a nuclear scientist?
Both China and Russia are permanent members of the UN Security Council. Any UN sponsored sanctions against Iran will likely face a veto from one or both of these nations, based upon their own strategic reasons. What is America to do? The military option is unrealistic.
Today, America is over extended militarily and out of touch diplomatically. I am most saddened by the reckless disregard for diplomacy, civility, and sportsmanship the Bush Administration has displayed since 9/11/01. They have managed to pull defeat and division from the jaws of victory and cohesion in the real “war on terror.” Just look at Afghanistan if you doubt this assertion.
The world mourned with us and for themselves after Sept. 11th. The attack on the World Trade Center was not only an attack upon America. It was an attack against all humanity. Citizens of far too many other countries died on 9/11 in NYC.
The other countries and thousands of families who lost loved ones at “ground zero” are fighting their own personal wars on terror everyday. Their lives have been changed forever. How dare we allow our “public servants” to exploit their sufferings to launch a preemptive war on Iraq, while not bringing Bin Laden to justice?

The end is beautiful. It brought back a lot of the feelings from that time. It’s just sad that we’ve strayed so far from that original feeling and allowed terrorists to divide us and make us live in fear, such that we happily give up our freedoms one after another. Our country could easily become like a country in the Middle East. Our government is full of religious extremists from the President on down. Americans need to wake up and realize that we are allowing terrorism to win by allowing it to control us. All a government official has to do is mention the word “terrorism” and Americans are happy to go along with any crazy scheme that individual has proposed, without even stopping to think. It is truly a sorry state of affairs.
