Whatever happened to Live Free or Die? Let’s give up habeas corpus, let the President wiretap anyone he wants, and torture anyone who he says might possibly have sometime maybe gave a few bucks to a charity he says aids “the enemy”. Not that he even knows who the heck that is. Are we fighting terrorism or liberating Iraq? While we’ve been over in Iraq liberating them, the Taliban has come back strong in Afghanistan and we are to stretched out in a civil war we caused to do anything about it.
You wanna talk about fighting terrorism? How about we stop doing their job for them? Quit chipping away at our liberties. We say we won’t let the terrorists change our policies, but isn’t that exactly what we’ve done? We now have a leader who has the power to pick up anyone off the street, put them in jail indefinitely, and use “harsh interrogation” on them. And understand that by giving him that power over non-citizens it extends to citizens as well. If you or I were designated as “illegal enemy combatants” and stuck in a jail with no habeas corpus, how do we prove we are citizens?
It doesn’t matter if he will do it or not. The fact that we have placed that much power in the hands of one person so he can save us from his boogeyman undermines everything this country supposedly stands for. Where is the equality of man in the statement “we’re fighting them over there, so we don’t have to fight them here?” Doesn’t that imply that Iraqi lives are worth less than our own? Where are our inalienable rights, without habeas corpus? You have no right to life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness sitting in a secret prison in Croatia.
The most frightening thing about all of this to me is the fact that we as a people do not care. We are happy to place this power in the hands of a single man. Where is the outrage? Our forefathers would kick our arses for being such cowards. Living with freedom means never being safe. I can’t believe that we as a country have become so scared that we would give up the right to be free. Our nation is insulting every person who died for that freedom, every person who has despaired under tyranny. And the greatest insult of all is no one even cares as long as they can still watch Two and a Half Men and the Daily Show.
