Renowned physicist James Van Allen, who helped launch the United States into the space age and for whom the Van Allen radiation belts are named, has died. He was 91.

Obviously no relation, but I always though it was cool that such a respected physicist shared most of his name with me.

Immediately after the 9/11 attacks, US officials declared that the attacks had been motivated by the terrorists “hatred for America’s freedom and values”. The sad thing is that today, there are still Americans who fall for it.

The argument of the “freedom and values” crowd boils down to this: “The decades of U.S. supplying of advanced weaponry and foreign aid to the Israeli government, which is now being used to kill people in Lebanon, and the U.S. government’s obeisance and submissiveness to the Israeli government, have had no adverse effect on how Arabs and Muslims feel about the United States. Their anger and hatred is caused by America’s freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and rock and roll.”

ABC announced that production begins Aug. 7 in Hawaii on the upcoming third season of its hit SF series Lost, which returns on Oct. 4 and will air Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

KBR, a Dick Halliburton subsidiary on Jan. 24 received a $385 million contract from the DHS to provide “temporary detention and processing capabilities for an emergency influx of immigrants.” I suspect that detaining “immigrants” is not really why these facilities are being built. What could this “influx” really be?

Police in the German city of Aachen received an unusual call for help late Wednesday when a woman telephoned to complain her husband was not fulfilling his sexual obligations.

“The police officials did not feel able to resolve the dispute, let alone issue any kind of official order,” Kemen said.
